Upcoming Special Art Licensing Editorial

We're going to take a short break from publishing interviews and other editorials on our artists around the globe because we're preparing a special manufacturer editorial for this week. I can't wait to share this amazing insight into the never-resting world of licensing! It's an exclusive interview with a manufacturer we really, really like ... don't miss it!

We'll resume the posting of our artists' interviews and stories on December 17th - there are so many wonderful artists in the licensing community, we can't seem to stop being amazed. Our goal is to eventually  publish everyone - we usually look through Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, etc., and online shops and other design blogs like Print&Pattern - it's so fun to scroll through! And speaking of which, thanks Bowie Style for publishing my Holiday Peace and Love Tree collection!

An additional piece of news:  from time to time I will post freebies that can be download and used for non-commercial/personal use only please. The first set of giveaways are a set of fun everyday art type borders and labels for crafts projects or for snail mail. One of the patterns is a cute snail to seal your packages or envelopes. So if you like the design, go to the links below and print your own set. I use white self-adhesive sheets 8 1/2 x 11 I purchased from worldlabel.com and cut them out to fit the application I need. They work great!

Tell Us a Story: Artist Patti Gay and Two Can Art

I just launched my new Etsy shop - and am so excited about it! Many artists in this community have online shops and Etsy is a favorite place. If you want to connect find me here: etsy.com/shop/alexcolombo.

To top it all and to celebrate this new activity of mine I picked this quote: "Life is like riding a bicycle, to keep balance, you must keep moving." - Albert Einstein

The story I am about to present is about life and moving forward. Artist Patti Gay has been doing exactly that. Below is her story behind Two Can Art.

Artists Patti and Noah
"It's a collection of images that are a collaboration between myself (Patti Gay) and my son, Noah who is autistic. I believe that everyone has something beautiful to give to the world and this is the story of Noah's contribution. Noah loves to paint and creates wonderful textures using all kinds of techniques. He paints with brushes, sponges, hands and even bubbles. I have always loved what he has created and thought them beautiful. Having saved them for a while, there is now a wealth of textures compiled. I thought it would be great to take those textures and use them to create images. Two Can Art was born!

I scan in his paintings first. I do sketches for designs next, then piece together textured shapes to create images. The collection now has over 200 images and is growing. It's really interesting to also see how the collection is evolving as I get more comfortable working with the textures. It's a real departure from my other work under Patti Gay-Design. It's also fun to see how this is influencing that work. Both are represented by my licensing agent JMS Art Licensing. There are cards and gift bags that will be coming out next year with Two Can Art licensed images on them. I am really excited about that.

I'm also starting to branch Two Can Art into work for picture books and am in the process of writing a story for kids that will have Noah's great textures incorporated in the illustrations. I have a book agent, Ronnie Herman of the Herman Agency that will show it when it is ready.

Noah continues to paint and add to the library for Two Can Art. The next project we will do together is to make paper. The plan is to add these textures along with the painted ones to new images. I've got a couple screens ready to go, so that will be starting soon. I can hardly wait!

The very best thing for me about Two Can Art is that we are doing something together that we both love."

Patti also hosts a blog called Illustrator's Market where she features amazing artists.

The Inspirational World of Fine Art: Artist Elizabeth Tipton

This week has been very inspirational for me for a number of reasons. I have completed a series of collections for licensing but also experimented on a couple of fine art projects that are so exciting and refreshing! I am thinking to re-open an on-line shop soon and join a growing community of illustrators and fine art artists who also license their beautiful work. Etsy seems to be a favorite place.

Artist Elizabeth Tipton
Elizabeth Tipton is an American artist known for her lush florals and decorative patterns. She recently also opened a shop on Etsy.com. Her original artwork has been licensed by leading manufacturers in the home decor, gift and stationery industry. She studied with John Collier at the University of Kansas and then continued on to a successful career as a commercial illustrator in St. Louis. She primarily works in oil, often transforming her imagery further using Photoshop. Now currently living in Nashville, she continues her painting and design and maintains her own website and blog.

The Moon from My Attic: What brought you to art in the first place? From a very young age I was good at drawing and painting and knew I wanted to be an artist. We moved around a lot and I was quite shy as a child. Making art was an escape from being in the real world. It was a way for me to create my own visual reality that comforted me.

TMFMA: What's exciting about your creative work? I love getting an idea, seeing something in my head and then trying to make it a visual reality. Lately the excitement has come from more process oriented work, not having a plan and seeing what imagery develops, what feels right and intuitive. This new process is more intellectually engaging for me. It feels more alive and immediate and keeps me in the moment.

TMFMA: Who has inspired you in your art journey? I love art history and took many courses in college. So I've always looked to artists from history to inspire me, but contemporary artists move me as well. Pierre Bonnard is probably the main artist I've gleaned the most inspiration from over the years, along with others like Schiele, Klimt, and Odilon Redon.

But I love Susan Rothenburg and other modern painters as well. It always comes down to emotional content, and their work resonates deeply with me.

TMFMA: Tell us about a recent project you'd like to share. I started a blog on my web site a little over a year and half ago.  Along with publishing sketchbook pages, photos from my life, and studio work, I made the decision to make a postcard each week and post it whether it was good or bad. I wanted to be vulnerable, to show that not everything comes out well. I also wanted to see what would develop over time, what imagery would surface.

It's been a good exercise. I just posted my 71st postcard and I still look forward to making them each week.

TMFMA: Any other important info that you'd like to share about your art? In addition to making paintings again I recently signed a wall decor agreement and started an Etsy shop. I've also been designing websites for creative people. I love making them from an artist's perspective, rather than that of a designer's. They end up being visual worlds that are less cluttered, more artful. The response has been really wonderful and I find I like the balance of that work against the other imagery I'm making.

I design facebook and blog banners too. It's very rewarding to help people visualize their dreams.
